Sample Activities
Have
the students research the issue of hunger in New York State.
Ask them to create posters or pamphlets describing some facts
and figures hunger in New York State, the reasons why this
is a problem in our wealthy country, and some programs that
are attempting to address this problem.
Most food recipients do not have land to plant a traditional
vegetable garden, but Garden-in-a-Bucket provides these individuals
with the opportunity to have fresh vegetables during the summer;
all they need is water and sunlight. Using a hammer and nail,
bang about a dozen holes into the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket.
Fill the bucket with soil to about four inches from the top,
adding a handful of granular plant food. Insert a stake halfway
down into the center of the bucket. Transplant a tomato seedling
into the center of the soil close to the stake (seedlings can
be purchased from a gardening center in late spring). Pass
the buckets out to elderly or disabled people within the community.
This is an excellent project for the end of the year; particularly
as a community service requirement for graduating seniors.
