Improvisation, or “improv,” was part of what made Commedia D’ell Arte so much fun to
perform and watch. Improvised performances were not completely made up; there was
often a clear beginning and end, as well as a specific sequence of events in the story.
Practice improvisation with your class. Give the students a scenario. For example, Joe
and Jane are playing a game at home, and it is getting close to bedtime. Mom tells them
to get ready for bed. Joe and Jane go to sleep. The students will need to create the story
in between those points (for example, brushing their teeth, asking Mom for 5 more
minutes, etc.) Discuss different choices that could have been made to tell the same story.
In our story, Mezzatino tries to tell the Queen that it is not fair to try to trick people
in order to get your own way. If you were Mezzatino, what would you say to the
Queen? Write a letter to the Queen, telling her how you think she should treat the
prince and princess.
