Fairy Tales (and
many other types of stories) often use pictures to help tell the story. Along
with showing the action of the story, these pictures can also show the emotions
of the characters. Some of the feelings in pictures include happiness, sadness,
surprise, anger, and fear. Draw a face for each emotion on separate pieces of
paper and label each. Ask your teacher to read a Fairy Tale to the class, but
without showing the pictures. As your teacher reads the story, hold up your drawings
of an emotion each time you feel the hero or heroine experiences it. After everyone
in the class is holding up an emotion card, the teacher can then show the class
the picture, and as a class, find evidence of the emotions in the picture.
In our story, a magic Flounder granted wishes. Pretend that you’ve met
a magic fish who is willing to grant you three wishes but you must make one wish
for yourself, one for someone you know, and one for the whole world. What would
your wishes be? Draw an outline of a fish on three separate pieces of large construction
paper. Write one of your wishes inside each fish. As a class, create an “ocean
wish wall” either by taping pieces of blue construction paper to the wall
or tacking up a piece of blue fabric. Attach each fish to the “ocean”.
