In Brief

Once upon a time, there was a Little Girl who did not want to share her toys. One day, the Little Girl’s mother told her she wouldn’t get any new toys until she gave some of the old ones away. The Little Girl ran into the woods and began to dig a hole to bury her toys at the foot of a tree. Suddenly, the tree spoke to her. His name was Obidiah Oak. The Little Girl asked Obidiah not to let any other boys or girls steal them. Obidiah agreed.

The Little Girl returned home empty handed and lied to her mother, telling her she gave her toys away to charity. When the holidays finally arrived, the Little Girl received new presents. She was quite happy until her mother told her that she had invited some children over to play. Not wanting to share her new toys, she took them to her hiding place beneath Obidiah Oak.

When she arrived, the Little Girl discovered that Obidiah had given all her toys away to the poor children who didn’t get any toys that holiday. The Little Girl became upset at Obidiah for breaking his promise. Obidiah told her that he had kept his promise; no one had stolen the toys, he had given them away.

At that moment, a little boy on cruches appeared. He was looking for the magic tree that was giving away presents. Obidiah told him that, sadly, there were no more toys. While a little disappointed, the boy smiled and wished both Obidiah and the Little Girl “Happy Holidays,” then turned to leave. The Little Girl stopped the boy and gave him one of her brand new toys. He was overjoyed and thanked her. The Little Girl thanked Obidiah for helping her realize the joy of sharing.
