In
Brief Anne Nelson, author of The
Guys, based
the script on her experience as an editor after the 9/11
attacks. All of the
characters and events are real. The names have been changed
to protect the privacy of the fallen firefighters’ families.
Two weeks following the September 11th attacks, Joan, a New
York City editor, is still looking for ways to help. Unexpectedly,
she receives a phone call on behalf of a fire captain named
Nick who lost most of his men in the attack. As fire captain,
he has been asked by many of the families to speak at the
memorial services. Nick is having trouble finding the right
words to honor the men, and is looking for a writer to help.
Over the course of an afternoon, Nick recalls the lives and
loves of the fallen men, as Joan turns his stories into memorials
of words. Throughout the day, Nick and Joan discover a shared
love for the city, as well as the possibility of a new friendship
in each other. Their travels through the stories of the fallen
heroes bring grief, humor, and an understanding of true heroism
and humanity.
